To celebrate our two-year anniversary, our February 2004 meeting will
take on the topics of Green Building, Sustainable Architecture and Design.
The meeting will be Monday, Feb., 2, 2004, 6:30-9pm, again at the Elkhorn
Slough Sanctuary Research Reserve visitor center, roughly midpoint between
Santa Cruz and Monterey. A detailed agenda will be provided via email
when you join our list or call for further information (to
join list).
Note the time change: we now gather around 6pm for networking; sessions
starts at 6:30.
What are the key issues of greatest importance to the membership?
We are likely to explore these topics, issues, and applications:
- The Business Case for Green Building: what are the costs and benefits?
Does it pay in the near-term? Long-run?
- Who is doing what? What are the success stories, examples and projects?
- LEED Certification -- what is it? Why does it matter? ("LEED"
stands for Leadership In Energy and Environmental Design; see the
US
Green Building Council website for details)
- Green Building and the Construction Industry (a film will be shown)
- Funding and finance options for new developments and retrofits
Other ideas and suggestions are welcome and encouraged. C3SN members
that have a unique perspective and would be willing to give a 10-20
minute presentation on their focus area are asked to contact Daniel
Robin, C3SN co-founder.
So far, Barry Hooper and Coleen Douglas have agreed to give a staus
update for the City
of Santa Cruz Green Building Working Group. Steve
Brauneis of Hayward Lumber is serving as a consultant for this meeting,
as is Sharon Sarris of Green Fuse Energy. We intend to invite one or
more LEED-accredited architects and other professionals, and members
of the Central Coast chapter-in-the-making of US Green Building Council.
We're also interested in involved people from the Sustainabile Facilities
group of the Packard Foundation and Monterey Aquarium ... we may invite
Barry Giles, facilities manager at the Moss Landing Marine Labs, and
other area experts and leaders. The precise agenda will evolve as we
better understand the issues, interests and opportunities.
